ABOUT THE TEMPLE OF HEALTH

TEMPLE OF HEALTH

Introduction
Temple of health was established in 1980 as a psychiatric clinic hospital to cater for the mentally ill persons, mental retardation and drug and alcohol dependent persons. The institution is a non-profit charitable organization registered and recognized by the Government of Nepal as a public Institution. Nepal has got only one Government Institution for the mentally ill whose services are below mediocre. The founding Chairman of "Temple of Health" Mr. T. B. Rayamajhi established the above institution to give professional psychiatric services to the Nepalese citizens who were relying on the psyatric hospitals of our neighboring country, India.

Psychiatric Situation of Nepal in Capsule
The Prevalence of mental illness in Nepal is estimated to be 1 to 1.5% on the total population in Nepal (Shrestha et al 1983). Though the estimate has been made on the basis of a small survey, it represents the tip of the ice-berg Mental illness however, has been growing over the years, and is becoming a major problem presently. The prevalence has been more with women than men population. Instructions catering for the mentally ill are still lacking while the number of cases specially on drugs and alcohol dependency are on the increase.

Activities of "Temple of Health"
The organization is governed by a board of director (Trustees). The organization has chairman, secretary and other general members. The founders of the organization, late Dr. B.P. Sharma was himself a psychiatric physician, who handed over his equipments and also part-time services to the institution in the early years. The institution was taken over by the late Mr. T.B. Rayamajhi who was a retired zonal commissioner of the Government of Nepal who also had occupied many high ranking civilian as well as constitutional posts.

Since 1980 Mr. Rayamajhi worked hard to collect funds and run the organization. He was responsible for making the center for what it is today. He had dedicated his well lived life for the institution.

"Temple of Health" is presently located at Bankali (near Pasupatinath Temple), Kathmandu, Nepal in a rented building. The hospital has 30 regular beds which are used to treat the mental patients, mental retardation and alcohol and drug dependent persons.Follow up of the patients and counseling are also parts of the services provided. The hospital is looked after by part-time and full-time doctors para medical staffs and a group of administrative staffs. There are both paying and non-paying patients. Non paying patients are cross-subsidized by those who can pay.

The hospital has treated over 2,121 patients since its establishment. The patients were not only from Nepal but also were international citizens who had fallen ill during their visits to Nepal.

"Temple of Health" was institutionalized by the Mr. Tek Bahadur Rayamajhi, from Dr. B.P. Sharma in 1980 as a social organization in order to serve the mentally ill. It also intends to mobilize the expert services of the professionals to the larger and growing needs of the people of Nepal based on the principles of the doing good for the needy and poor people of Nepal.
